JUDGING CRITERIA BASED ON CATEGORIES:
Mens Bodybuilding Criteria
In competitive bodybuilding, bodybuilders aspire to develop and maintain an aesthetically pleasing body and balanced physique. The competitors show off their bodies by performing a number of poses. Bodybuilders will be judged on the overall quality of their muscular development. Judging for the WBFF is based upon the presentation of:
- Round 1: Symmetry/Aesthetics
- Round 2: Muscularity
- Round 3: Free posing/Routine round 60 sec total time
- Round4: Final Pose down
Bodybuilders are required to bring 2 CD copies of their music with their name written on the CD to hand in at athlete registration.
Routines should be choreographed within a 60 second time period.
The men’s bodybuilding will consist of 4 weight classes for the men’s open bodybuilding starting with;
- Light weight: 156 and under
- Middle weight: 157 to 176
- Light heavy: 177 to 198
- Heavy weight: 198 and over
ROUND 1 Symmetry & Aesthetics
The judges are looking for overall symmetry, aesthetics, balance and proportion. There should be a V-taper from the shoulders to the waist. The stomach region should be muscular yet small and tight from all angles. From the front, the thighs should have an outer sweep and the calves should show an inner muscle belly.
Muscularity and size should be taken into account in this round, but the overall aesthetic look of the body should take precedence.
In this round the athlete is viewed and compared from four sides, (quarter poses front, right side, back, left side), in the semi relaxed position. In all four positions knees are to be locked, feet are to be no more than 2 inches apart, and there is to be no twisting of the upper torso.
The athletes will come out in groups of no more than ten at a time to do the quarter poses as a group, and then compared 2 or 3 at a time. When all the judges are satisfied, athletes are placed, score sheets marked and given to the head judge.
ROUND 2: Muscularity (The 8 Compulsory Poses)
The judges are looking for size, muscularity, definition and separation based just upon the eight compulsory poses.
The athletes will be judged in the 8 compulsory poses:
- Front Double Biceps
- Front Lat Spread
- Side Chest
- Rear Double Bicep
- Rear Lat Spread
- Abdominal & Thighs
- Most Muscular
- Triceps, side of choice
The athletes will come out and do the eight compulsory poses individually (when there are more than 20 athletes in a division, (the athletes will be brought out 2 at a time), then be brought out and compared in groups of 3-6
ROUND 3: FREE POSING
The judges are judging the overall physique on all points (aesthetics, muscularity, size, balance, proportion, and symmetry) but only what the athlete shows them. If an athlete hides his weak points, it is to his advantage and the judge will base the score on what is presented. This score is based solely on the body, not presentation.
Each athlete presents his body as he wants it to be seen, choreographed to music for approximately 60 seconds. If he has weak points on his physique or weak poses, he is not required to do them He is to present his body to his best advantage to the judges.
Entertainment Quality
- 60 second Posing routine
A second score solely on the entertainment value of the posing routine. The use of props and or costumes are encouraged. The athlete must remember that if the body is covered too much or for too long, or if the effects prevent the adequate presentation of the body in the judges mind, it could affect the score.
ROUND 4: FINAL POSEDOWN
This is the judge’s final chance to assess the athlete’s physique. The judges are first looking at the physique as a whole, then breaking it down to symmetry, aesthetics, muscularity, size, balance and proportion.
The top five will come out as a group in numerical order. The judges can ask the head judge for repositioning of the athletes if necessary to aid in the judging. Athletes will first do quarter turns as a group, then the eight compulsory poses as a group. The head judge will then order the athletes to pose down and the athletes will break into freeposing of their choice to out-do the other athletes on stage.

Hi! Just reading over your requirements for the Female Figure Model. At the beginning of the description, you mention that there would be no one piece suit, just a bikini. But reading further down, under “Prejudging” I noticed you mentioned that competitors would be judged in a two AND one-piece suit with heels. Just wanted to be sure if this was right or not. Thanks!
I wanted to clarify some info for the female figure competition July 4th.
I read the following:
In this round competitors are expected to wear a two piece swimsuit and 5 inch clear stiletto heels.
My question –
Does it have to be a posing suit or just a regular bikini? , Also is there a range for the height of the stiletto’s? …o they have to have a clear heel? – open toe or closed toe? Any particular color?
Round 2: Comparisons Round
In this round competitors are expected to wear a two piece swim suit that compliments their personal style.
My question – -
Must it be a poseing suit?
Does the style or color of shoes matter?
What height of shoe?
hello Ladies,
choice of suit is totally up to you , a posing suit , with rhinestones is usually what our competitors wear, also a clear 5-6 inch stiletto shoe is best. Please let us know if you have any further questions.
You only require a two piece suit for all female competiton categories.

Allison Dillett

Hi there,
What is the opinion on tattoos. I would liek to get into the competition circuit but I do have a sleeve and other piece work.
I thank you for your input and opinion.
Hi There,
I just wanted to confirm that I only need ONE two piece suit. I am planning on wearing a two piece figure suit (rhinestone and color).
Hope it is ok.
Thanks
Joanna
As a rule, there are no scoring deductions for tattoos. If you’re concerned with the judges frowning on your tattoos, considering purchasing a product called ‘Dyoderm’ It literally will ‘stain’ your skin for a period of time but can be very effective at concealing the tattoos when combined with another competition tanning product.
Many retailers carry the product. Here’s a link to bodybuilding.com:

Hi, my question is for the Mens Bodybuilding; is there an age group or just the categories for weight example: Middle Weight and Light Heavy Weight.
There are only weight categories. No age divisions.

Mike….bring it on! If you haven’t already attended one of our events, I would strongly suggest that you come out to get a feel for what is required in the male fitness model category. 3 rounds of competition are scored (sportswear, swimwear and evening wear)… Register for any of the events from our home page… We’ve recently added shows in Quebec and Chicago for 2010 in addition to Vancouver, Calgary and Toronto. Good luck!

Is the themewear for Fitness Models ONLY for the prejudging show?
Why do you not have a female bodybuilding category??
Hello,
I’m thought I saw somewhere that there is a bikini fitness model category for 35+, but when I try registering, it does not give me this option. Am I mistaken in thinking there is such a category? Help! :)
Do you wear the same suit for the symmetry and comparison rounds for figure? Or do you need 2 suits?
no you only require one suit .. thanks
