Only days away from the highly anticipated WBFF Alberta Championships and Iâm PUMPED to cheer on all the competitors!! Look for ContestPrep.ca athletes Mike Schnurrer, Paul Boyko, Sara Minshull, Maria Haits, Andrea Smith, Lindsay Baxter, Sara Johnson and Amanda Lee -- I know that WBFF will be an amazing experience for them!! :)
Often competitors underestimate the importance of posing and stage presence. Learning first-hand from professional or experienced competitors will give you the inside edge on what the judges are looking for. Itâs important that all athletes spend time developing a bodybuilding posing routine or fitness modeling strut that showcases their personality and strengths. As each contest nears our ContestPrep.ca athletes take part in weekly posing clinics, which not only helps them to get comfortable posing in front of a crowd, but also brings our community together to support new competitors, exchange ideas and keep morale high!
Check out this short vid of WBFF Pros Craig Bonnett and myself, and Pro Fitness Model Steve Moerman working with some of Manitobaâs best up-and-coming fitness, figure, bodybuilding and bikini competitors (the ContestPrep.ca Alberta Team).
Hope to see you at the show!

In over two decades of my involvement in this wonderful sport of bodybuilding & fitness, a prevailing attitude always seems to surface and Iâve rarely seen it addressed. Certainly weâd all agree that encyclopedias have been compiled on âhow to get in shape, how to lose the last ten pounds, how to carb load, etc. etc.â to the point where youâd likely rather throw your hands in the air and hail that youâve had enough diet and training advice already!
Quite often, some avid trainers wish to pursue the very (sense the sarcasm please) lucrative world of fitness modeling in their quest to âget discoveredâ or perhaps have their name attached to a piece of cardio equipment or something of that nature ala Tony Little.
Thatâs not to say that fitness modeling can not lead (please stress on the word lead) to bigger and better ventures but in itself, youâd likely be better off playing âPowerballâ than you would carbing up for the âMr. or Mrs. Tucked Out of the Way Junior Novice Sunshine Mayhemâ competition if you desire to load your coffers. I just got word from bodybuilding.com while I was at their office this afternoon that my Dymatize Nutrition international supplement ad has been nominated supplement ad of the year. There are two other supplement companies that are nominated as well. We will find out the results at the Mr Olympia EXPO who wins the 2009 supplement ad campaign of the year. Pretty exciting that the ad that you’re in is even nominated for an award. Everybody that was part of this campaign did an exceptional job creating a killer marketing graphical campaign. I am honored to be a part of this. Kudos to Dymatize Nutrition. Let’s pray that we win this thing on July1st.
What happens behind the scenes of the competition world? What do we go through before and after the show? There are things that happen to competitors that arenât often spoke of. Maybe itâs taboo or maybe we donât think the general public will truly understand what we are going through.
You can go to informational seminars and workshops. Quite often youâre told how to pick out the best suit for your physique, how to apply competition tan or various other show prep tips. Thatâs only scratching the surface. No one really tells you how much money, time and effort you need to invest. Lots of times, no one will mention what the affects of dieting does to your social life. How about what an extremely low body fat percentage will do to de-regulate a femaleâs hormonal cycle? These concerns can reek havoc on your psyche. And, if only someone had told you that itâs normal for you to be experiencing it, it may have helped. [read more...]
